image recovery from formatted HD

I'm trying to recover images from a formatted disk. There are plenty of shareware tools out there for Windows that cost money, none of which I am interested in. I found a nice tool called jpeg-recovery on sourceforge, it worked great on my USB thumbdrive that I trashed the partition table on. The only issue is that it only works for JPEGs and I also need bitmaps as well. Does anyone have any good suggestions on FREE software to do this? OS doesn't matter, although using /dev/hdc to read the data is so much easier than trying to figure out how to read a bad disk in windoze.
