Why the move to Grub? lilo is fine, lilo is logical, follows the dev/hd.. normality, brub is strange.
I hate grub, its not lilo, I even prefer Loadln to Grub.
And why are all the distros moving to grub? I just screwed up my main system, doing and apt-get dist-upgrade (debian) and after the first attempt where it utterly shagged my system (my fault I admit due to me having bolted on lots and lots of extras and having a total silly system). So I thought, why not just reinstall from first principles , so 1 backup of /home later, thats what I do.
Anyway, lessons to be learned from my experience....
1. the /etc backup you did a year ago is no good
2. Pouring yourself a rather strong Vodka and coke after you press the button to make changes in your hard drive is not a good idea
3. Realising GRUB is the default boot manager if you choose tasksel in the debian installer is bad
4. Trying to get it to work when drunk is not good
5. Kicking your box while wearing heavy boots results in about a second of satisfaction and a broken front facia
6. Leave it to tomorrow, boot up another box and get drunk is the best option
2. Pouring yourself a rather strong Vodka and coke after you press the button to make changes in your hard drive is not a good idea
I can't see vodka and coke EVER being a good idea... Now vodka and a splash of olive juice, shaken while facing Italy (that's as close to vermouth as I get) and served in a chilled martini glass with 2 olives; well, that's another story!
I know how you feel brother, one time after I installed fedora test 2<whocares> and when I went to firstboot nothing,I mean nothing, one line at the top left and that was it.So O.K. I just reinstall<whatever> nope. Will not boot with the HD conected.I can boot a live cd but not with the hd connected, now what.I tried everything anybody said, nothing.I had bought the box about a year before(cheap gateway but good for me after my customizing)so I get it back to shiped as shape and do you know they put a new hd and motherboard to get to work, david

Rep:
back when grub was started, lilo couldn't boot past cylinder 1023. that's about 8 gigs into a disk or less depending on how the disk is set up. i think grub was started for gnu hurd. then lilo was rewritten to handle > 1023 cylinders. i think it appeals to some, because you don't have to reinstall it after changes are made. anyway, the change started when grub was about done, and lilo didn't support > 1023.
