i cant install any tar files with my linux


I am using Ubuntu & i download some tar.gz files & after extract them always when i type ./ configure i received this :- ( this example for a game called stratagus )

I tried to type is & i got this error :-

root@hesham-desktop:~# sudo apt-get install g++2.95
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
root@hesham-desktop:~# sudo aptitude install build-essentail
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)

so whats this meaning ?? can you help me

It looks like you don't have a compiler installed. You need to at least install the gcc compiler. You should probably also install the kernel sources. Use your distribution's software package manager to install the compiler and kernel sources.

type

sudo apt-get install g++-2.95

in a terminal. this will install the gnu c++ compiler

I think you should install the build-essential package because other tools needed for development will also get automatically installed. You can do

$sudo aptitude install build-essential

it was the only one in my package manager, if i didn't left something out :-)

First, check in your package manager (Adept or Synaptic) to see if the application is there. The package manager is always the best way to install something.
Next best is to find a .deb or .rpm package. (On Ubuntu, you can install .rpm using alien).

Last option is compiling.
