Question I can't decompress a file

Hi. I'm a real newbie to linux.

I was trying to install lynx to access internet in command mode.

I try to decompress the file "lynx2.8.5.tar.gz"
using gzip -d lynx2.8.5.tar.gz

there was an error:

gzip: lynx2.8.5.tar.gz: invalid compressed data --crc error

gzip: lynx2.8.5.tar.gz: invalid compressed data --length error

I can extract the file by WinRAR without any problem.

Why's that and how can I fix this?

I'm guessing here, Did you D/L on windows and WinRAR worked (is that a windows program - I don't know) then transfered the file to linux? Did you transfer it with ftp in text mode or something?

You need to untar it as well as ungzip it. Try:
Quote:
tar xf lynx2.8.5.tar.gz
"tar xf" works on bzipped files as well.

the file was downloaded to a Windows XP PC

the file was orignally downloaded to Windows PC (It's a windows 2000 Pro running IIS ftp) [WinRAR is a windows program]

then I use text mode ftp to get file.

You need to use binary mode.
