I am running a Windows XP Dell Optiplex GX 270

Which Linux System should I try? Never ran the program and not many answers online. This computer is acceptable for windows 7 32 Bit if I purchase a Higher definition Graphics Card. It does have a X86 Processor, I want Linux for internet use.

Hi,

with the information you've given I can only suggest to try as many as you can. If you'd like a more specific answer you'll need to tell us what you want to use the system for, what sort of general computing and *nix experience you have and perhaps the hardware specs of your "Dell Optiplex GX 270" (don't expect us to look this up).

It is acceptable for windows 7 32 bit as it has a X86 Processor and 47 gig HDD, But I need a Higher Def Graphics card, I want to get rid of using Windows and I use this computer for Home Business and Facebook

Ok, so it should be able to run pretty much any modern linux distro.

What do you mean? You are planning to purchase a new graphics card? Why?

I'm not sure what is "Home Business" is. Do you mean things like an office suite and email perhaps? If so, then any distro should be fine.

Ok, that is just a web browser, so nothing special.

So, I would think most of the big distributions should work for you. You've not mentioned any computing experience so from that I infer that you are not particularly interested in tinkering with your system and as such should probably avoid distros like Fedora and Arch etc. Debian, Ubuntu or Mint would probably be ok. There are bound to be many mores suggestions.

Please note however that you will need to do some reading to understand how to maintain (and perhaps install) your system. It is not difficult but it may be quite different to your expectations.

These things from memory are 2.4 or 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4. The graphics is no good and will not run Gnome Shell, it will revert back to Gnome fallback with the OEM graphics. I have a Optiplex L170, actually I have 4 of them. I find it difficult to believe they will run Windows 7 at an acceptable level. Yes they will run it but it will be as slow as a wet week starting, opening programs, etc etc etc.

For someone who has never run Linux before I would suggest LinuxMint but try something like LXDE, MATE, or XFCE instead of Cinammon (which is a heavily forked Gnome 3) or KDE.

You will get software like Firefox and LibreOffice.
