does anyone know if hp thin client linux version supports desktop icons?

Probably not. They come with very minimal capabilities. However, you can blow them away and install your own minimal distro. I did that with a bunch of Devon NTA fat clients using a customized Damn Small Linux. I had to do it so the clients could remote control and print to several different hosts at the same time.

It's very involved. First learn how to install Damn Small Linux on a hard drive (it's on their website); then do the same but on a compact flash drive. Bottom line is, you'll have to become familiar with install Linux on a compact flash. I use Damn Small Linux because it fits on a 128MB Compact Flash and it has most of what you need (rdesktop, cups, firefox).
