How to use a ":" in VI session???

I have to use (I think) the VI Editor to edit a "read only" file. The problem is that I have to use a ":" in the file. Every time I use the ":" VI dump me back into command mode.

Is there a way around this? Is there another text editor I could use?

Thanks for the help.

Ken

First of all, vi won't change the files permissions for you,
if it's read-only it's read-only.

As for "using the colon" - to insert a colon you'll have to
go into insert mode first. Press i, and then punch in your
colon. ESC when done.

Cheers,
Tink

well if your in vi(m) and you enter "insert mode" by type the letter "i" you can type
colons all day ... if you hit it first before insert mode, then yes you will be issuing commands.

*edit* looks like ozz is too slow.
