How to setup path in Redhat7.1

Hi,
I installed jdk file under following directory:"/usr/java/jre1.3.1_01/", when use "env" and found java file is not in the path settings. Could anyone please tell me how to set path for that? Can I do that as a user not root? Thanks for your help!

Thanks Rshaw,
But I am not clear where should I input those commands, in the command line of terminal or add in some file? Thanks again!

I tried it from command line, but it does not seem work. When I used "PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jre1.3.1_01
export PATH", and then try "java", it said "command not found". Please kindly tell me what I should do next? Thanks.

there may be another directory or two that have to be included. my path looks like: usr/lib/jre1.3/jre/bin.

i would go to /usr/java/jre1.3.1_01 and see if there is another directory there. once you find the actual java executable, then use the path / export path commands
