that's an impressive solution, but i wonder if the chip can't be made to work better.
i found out it's intel HD graphics (Braswell).
searching that might give some interesting results.
do you have the xf86-video-intel driver installed and running?
what does Xorg.0.log say about graphics?
have a search.
have another.

Hi Ondoho,

This machine is the worst I ever bought. I used to have the acer C720 chromebook with very similar specs and (a different) celeron processor (which was the Haswell variant). Same price $200, twice the performance. I am so often waiting for this one to catch up - when changing widows, scrolling, and even as I type right now there is a five second delay between input and seeing words on the screen.

So, I am most interested to research to find a better graphics driver.

Actually, when I first got this paperweight I did deal look into a graphics driver issue, because the OS had requested some microcode be implemented that was in fact Kaby Lake, not Braswell. To do with enabling new hardware support for Hyperthreading, as I recall.

There was plenty of talk about intel having retrofitted that KL technology to certain Celeron processors. However the Celeron brand covers an especially wide multitude of products and I could find no evidence that my particular processor actually had Kaby Lake retrofitted. Nor did I see any significant (supposedly 15% less cpu loading for this kind of task) improvement when I turned it on.

But, now that you raise it I'll definitely check out those links. Especially since I recently rebuilt the machine and replaced xubuntu with Debian/xfce4, which asked for a different (I think) microcode patch.

Will report back.

Cheers....

Andrew.
