How to make text file into patch?

I have found text on a web page for a patch fixing bugs in an application. Being new to Linux, I have no idea what to do with the text. Aren't patches usually tarballs? I've done some Google searches, but most of the hits deal with installing a patch, not how to utilize text for the purpose of patching.

Where do I start?

Just copy the text into new file, save and then use the command patch I would assume to patch it to whatever, etc.
