Unhappy How to log conversation between server in /var/log/messages?

Hi,

I read in PPP-HOWTO 8.2. My modem connects but ppp never starts up:

"The only thing to do here is to make sure you are logging the chat conversation between you Linux PC and the server into your syslog (/var/log/messages)"

How to do this thing anyway. I looked at this file /var/log/messages and I got there some old crap from past year... how to initialise it?

pleaz help.

It seems you syslog daemon isn't writing to that file. First check which syslog you're running from the process list (ps -ef | grep syslog). If it's syslogd, next check /etc/syslog.conf to see the files syslog is writing to.
