How to list installed software on Linux?

Howdy,

Is there a command I can use to list all installed software on a Linux server? I'm looking for something that isn't distro-specific, however I am running SuSE 9.0 and 9.3.

I know I can use YaST on SuSE to list installed software, but I want to run this from a shell. Also, I've read that "rpm -qa" will list installed rpm's, but I don't think it will list software that was installed by compiling source files (make, make install).

Thanks in advance!

LQ'er Martin Rasch wrote a very nice utility that lists the installed software under SuSE. I use this myself and it's a great little tool -- J.W.
