The easiest way to configure wine is to install
winesetuptk
When you have insgtalle that you don t have to edit the configuration file.
If you have debian, just type
apt-get install winesetuptk
However i think there is also a rpm.
I hope you don t expectect to get something like battlefield run by wine. Directx isn 't included or not enough included in wine as i know.
If you just want to use Office it is enough or for games like Master of Orion 2
Sudden strike (Games without 3d acceleration.)
I made also the experience, that the games run better if you install them first in windows and copy them than to linux.
But when you just want to have smth like word, try abiword, gnumeric or Openoffice1.0.org
