How to install latest version of Firefox on CentOS

I'm trying to upgrade my current version of Firefox 1.5.0.9-0.1 to the latest version available. I downloaded and gunzipped the tar file, but I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm having trouble finding installation instructions from Mozilla (though I'm probably just not looking in the right place). How can I got about installing this latest version of Firefox?

If you only want to install for one user, that's about all you have to do really, i.e. unzip the tar file in your home directory. Just go into the resulting directory created by unzipping the tar file and double click on the "firefox" file and it should launch.

Hmm, when I do that, it launches the old version of Firefox. Perhaps I should try removing the old version of Firefox and replacing the old files with the new ones that I just downloaded. Would that work?

Its not advised to remove the older version because some of the apps on your system may be built against it. All you need to do is untar the file, move the resulting directory to a place like /opt and then edit your menu and desktop entries so that they execute the new Firefox instead of the old one. If you put the firefox directory in /opt, then the command for your menus or desktop icons will be /opt/firefox/firefox.
