Most people install linux from what we call a Distro (distribution). Almost every disto has some way to keep software up to date and a way to install new software so that the entire disto keeps working. The disto's installed method is the preferred tool to start with.
If the distro doesn't offer a software you will have to find out a bit about the software before you attempt to install it.
Some apps can be installed by other manager methods, other repositories or simply following the read me file. Many are disto specific.
From the 11 threads started today, OP has just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and is having a lot of fun learning about it. He has not had a chance to reply to any of the threads yet.
