Lightbulb How to install a program

Hi,

I'm a total newbie to linux and I need some help. So, I thought to install msn-messenger so i can msn a friend for help. Problem: I can't get messenger installed
I can download amsn in different extensions .bin .rpm .exe... But then linux asks which program to use to open the file. When i type rpm -i filename.rpm, i get

"error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Bewerking niet toegestaan (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm"

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
W

Distro is a bunch of programs packaged around the linux kernel. Suse 9.3 is your distro. Try this link: http://amsn.sourceforge.net/wiki/tik...inux-installer

Basically, you download the .bin, then change the permissions so that it is executable (either right click and select permissions, then check all the "execute" boxes or go to the command line and chmod +x amsn-blahblahblah.bin of course, substituting blah blah for whatever the file is actually called). Then click on it.

I don't have SUSE, but you might actually have an instant messenger already installed that will work. Look for Gaim or kopete or "instant messenger" in your startup menu. Some of them have msn capability built in.

Here's a link to a gaim rpm that you should be able to just double click to install http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-...etwork%2Fgaim/

Gaim is a multi protocol instant messenger and should work with MSN

You want this one:
gaim-1.5.0-1.guru.suse93.i686.rpm
