there is no default player in "linux". this is something specific to a desktop environment like gnome or kde.

currently I am using an Ubuntu 6.1 for testing. Once I go to a website with a default video running / treaming, ubuntu automatically uses TOTEM to play such .asf or other stream file. I would like to change this to VLC or xmms.

I prefer GNOME - how do i do this with GNOME nor KDE?

Your advise is highly appreciated.
