If you are using KDE, open file ~/.kde/share/apps/konsole/profiles/myKonsole and scroll down to the line which reads something like 'defaultfont=fixed,12,-1,2,50,0,0,0,1,0'. The number 12 after the word 'fixed' is the default font size. Change that to a larger size and save the file.
I don't know if you will have to log out and back in for it to take effect. I leave it to you to discover.
If you can't figure it out by editing your kernel line in grub then go download and install fbset. It'll let you change the res, you could run it in /etc/rc.local do have it done every boot but I'd be working on the vga kernel option.
Open /etc/lilo.conf
Replace vga=ask with vga=number where number corresponds to the resolution in the list that you get with vga=ask. If vga option is not there, add it somewhere on the top of the file.
If you have KDE installed, better set the mode using kickstart.
