How do I solve a "Protected multilib versions" error when trying to install a library via yum?

I'm using Amazon Linux. I'm having a problem trying to install a library via yum. The short of it is I get an error

Code:
	Protected multilib versions: gdk-pixbuf2-2.24.1-6.el6_7.i686 != gdk-pixbuf2-2.28.2-4.1.ll1.x86_64
I'm confused about how to solve this error. Below you can see the error in context ...

Code:
[myuser@mymachine ~]$ sudo yum search libgtk

Error: Multilib version problems found. This often means that the root
       cause is something else and multilib version checking is just
       pointing out that there is a problem. Eg.:

         1. You have an upgrade for gdk-pixbuf2 which is missing some
            dependency that another package requires. Yum is trying to
            solve this by installing an older version of gdk-pixbuf2 of the
            different architecture. If you exclude the bad architecture
            yum will tell you what the root cause is (which package
            requires what). You can try redoing the upgrade with
            --exclude gdk-pixbuf2.otherarch ... this should give you an error
            message showing the root cause of the problem.

         2. You have multiple architectures of gdk-pixbuf2 installed, but
            yum can only see an upgrade for one of those architectures.
            If you don't want/need both architectures anymore then you
            can remove the one with the missing update and everything
            will work.

         3. You have duplicate versions of gdk-pixbuf2 installed already.
            You can use "yum check" to get yum show these errors.

       ...you can also use --setopt=protected_multilib=false to remove
       this checking, however this is almost never the correct thing to
       do as something else is very likely to go wrong (often causing
       much more problems).

       Protected multilib versions: gdk-pixbuf2-2.24.1-6.el6_7.i686 != gdk-pixbuf2-2.28.2-4.1.ll1.x86_64
Error: Protected multilib versions: atk-1.30.0-1.el6.i686 != atk-2.8.0-4.1.ll1.x86_64
Any help is appreciated, - Dave

Don't know that particular distro, but I do know yum, and it can be a PITA.

Did you read 1,2,& 3 in your output below? This is what it's beefing about
Code:
Error: Multilib version problems found. This often means that the root
       cause is something else and multilib version checking is just
       pointing out that there is a problem. Eg.:
Is this the error?
Code:
[myuser@mymachine ~]$ sudo yum -y install gtkhtml2.i686
Do you need that in 32 bit, because you already have it in 64 bit? Why?

This is the output I get running uname -a

Code:
[myuser@mymachine ~]$ uname -a
Linux sandbox2.evo-text.com 4.4.30-32.54.amzn1.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 10 15:52:05 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Notice it is a 64-bit architecture. I'm trying to install the libgtk library (because that's what's needed by Chrome evidently). If there is a different way to do it other than the commands I listed in my question, I'm open.

The library it's bellyachinjg about is 32 bit
i686 = 32 bit
x86_64 = 64 bit.

On Amazon linux, if it's using yum, just install what you want and it should sort dependencies as long as you have the disk space.

Safe to say the reason I'm posting is because that's not happening. Below is the output of the missing library. Not that this is established, do you know the answer to my original question?

 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem

Look, you have yum and it downloads automatically, along with dependencies. You need to clean up that database, and just p[ull out anything it's complaining about unless it's a fundamental system part. Then reinstall what you want, and yum will sort the dependencies. You seem to have a dodgy database.

Man yum & man rpm gives you cleaning targets, e.g. yum --check & rpm --cleandb or whatever. Personally I loathe & detest yum, rpm, etc. I use Slackware and do my own dependency checking.

You're giving me more credit for Linux knowledge than i actually have. I read the complete man page for "yum" and I'm still no closer to understanding what commands I need to run to get this libgtk library installed. If anyone knows what those commands are, please reply.

Try these
Code:
rpm --rebuilddb
yum check --showduplicates
Have in mind to pull out anything it bellyaches about being installed. If faced with the choice between 64 &32 bit, remove the 32 bit. Then try
Code:
yum distribution-synchronization
Installations done with yum and these do-the-thinking-for-you distros are inclined to have a finite life span. That was certainly my experience. I then got a subcontracted apcb design to a guy who had had the same slackware installation for 8 years. I thought: That's for me!

Don't post me the full output - just the juicy bits.
