Question How do I select the default browser?

Hi everybody,

I have Mandrake 10 installed.
I use KDE, my mail client is evolution, and my default browser is Galeon.
I would like Mozilla to be my default browser (d. ex. when I click a link in a mail message), but don't know how to do this.

Thanks in advance for your help, guys!

Nicolas

Forgive my ignorance, but:

In the Mozilla menubar I didn't find those options, neither looking in the terminal in the mozilla directory.
What is the Mozilla Firefox.

Another questions: I just noticed that Galeon and Mozilla doesn't re4cognise the " mailto:***" command. Is it normal? What is the reason?

Yes, that is normal. Download the mozex extension to intercept mailto clicks and then respond accordingly

Maybe my reflexion is stupid, I dont know, but why do we have to install all those plugins, and adds with linux?
In the case of the mozex, What is it? mailto: is just a javascript command, isn't it?

It's called choice. Rather than install a bloated piece of software with features you don't need and will never use, you start with a base and you control the software.

It also makes it easier for the developers to focus on their individual remits, rather than hacking one great monolithic app.

This means you get better software.

hi nicoc,

in answer to your orignial question..

i also use kde and the evolution mail client ('cause it's loads better than kmail.....)

given that evolution is a gnome application, you need to use gnome-control-center to set up the default browser evolution uses when clicking a link in a mail message. i use suse, and gnome is located in /opt/gnome; basically though, just look for the gnome control center application, run it, and go to 'advanced preferences' and 'preferred applications'. should sort things for you - post back if you have trouble.

I understand you reflection, but don't you think that the "mailto:" command is very used by every internet surfer?

You know, I am working to make a progressive migration of nearly all the computers in my office (+-30), and for me it is not a problem to install all the features I need. I usually receive the help I need thanks!

I work with Mandrake 9.2 and now with the version 10 since a few month, and the experience is very positive, but in my office it will be very difficult to convince lot of people because of all those extra features you have to install, and the manipulations you sometimes have to do with the terminals.

Thanks Kevin!

For information, in Mdk10, the gnome control center is located in /usr/bin

Don't understand:

I tried to install the mozex.
The installation process worked, but, it looks like it is not installed. It stills give me the error when I click on a mail address.

What I realy don't understand is that now firefox stopped to show me the .swf docs in the web pages...
The flash player is still installed; I didn't touch the files.

I was wondering if all those problems coud be linked to the place I installed the firefox:
home/nic/local

Someone has an idea?

Following the reflection I have a new question:
I am trying the firefox after the Konqueror, Mozilla, Galeon, because all of them had the same weakness to my eyes: there was always something that they where unable to do (show .swf files, validate some type of forms,...), and, in general, they are pretty slow.
My objective is to have a quick and flexible browser that I could easily install to the others machines in my office. I am looking for the package, but I didn't find it yet.

Someone has an idea?

Nicolas

You could call it what you like, but its thought of a protocol, and it's just an easy way to distinguish between normal links and mailto.

Ok, you installed it, now you need to go to tools > options > extensions, or if you have v0.9, tools > Extensions, then click on the 'tick' symbol for configuration options.
You just check the "interecept mailto click" box and in the text box put what mailer you want.

In tools>extentions , I find the DOM Inspector 1.0
The only option it gives me is an update. If I select the update button, It says that Firefox was not able to find any available updates...
