How do I record audio

How do I record audio from a TV card (v4l device?). I am trying to convert some audio tapes to CD. I have a tape player inputing into my TV card, I can hear the audio OK but can't record it. I have tried Krec, the 'record level' vu display seems to indicate the sound is being seen by the program but when I try to record it does not record any sound.

I've checked all the settings I can find, the only thing that may be out is that it indicates that the arts daemon should be suid root but it is not. How do I set it to suid root?

Audacity doesn't seem to have any provision for input from a TV card, I don't know what other application to try.

Thanks

If your main purpose is to record your cassettes to cd, connect your cassette output to your pc sound card's microphone or line-in jacks. I connected my turntable to my laptop's microphone jack, opened Audacity, and began recording with no problems. You should be able to connect a cassette deck in a similar fashion and record.

If there's some reason you want to specifically use your tv card instead of your audio card for this, I can't help.

Problem is my tape deck (and also turntable) have only RCA output jacks, the sound card has only a single jack line input. Will try an adapter cable....

Same problem with adapter cable...I can hear the sound through the computer speakers but cannot record.
Also tried sox
Code:
 rec -d /dev/dsp -t wav soxrectest1.wav
Audacity preferences only option for input devices is /dev/dsp; it appears /dev/dsp is not functioning. but then how I am getting sound through the computer sound system?

Hmmm...

Try Audacity again, and check the Audio I/O preference checkbox on Playthrough to "Software Playthrough (Play new track while recording it)". See if you get the input signal when you "hit" the record button. FYI - I'm using Audacity v. 1.3.2-beta, don't know if earlier versions have this option.

Tried that...it "records" ie it makes a sound track but it records no sound.

I did get a 'recording' with
Code:
rec -c 2 -v 10 -r 44100 -t wav soxrectest1.wav
but it is 90% static & 10% input. You can hear the music in the background but the static is louder than the music. It's as if the recording was of an unconnected input & the actual input was random interference ... but I'm getting a clean output from the speakers.

After literally hours of fiddling with settings, patch cords & plugins, I am finally recording with audacity.

Thanks for your help.
