How do I enable GTK 1.x font anti-aliasing? (AA)

I would like to know how to enable font anti-aliasing for GTK 1.x programs such as XMMS.
I would also like to know why the fonts are rendered differently on GTK 2.x applications such as Gaim/Pidgin.
Thanks.

I've seen hacked version of GTK 1.x with supports anti aliasing but by default NO you cannot have anti aliasing in GTK 1.x
GAIM/Pidgin uses GTK 2.x which supports anti aliasing

That is what I'm looking for... The hacked version of GTK 1.2...
Anyone know where I can get it or what I need to modify?
Thanks.
