how do i associate programs with file types?


whenever i use gaim and try and click on someones hyperlink in their profile i get an error saying that it is an invalid address or somethin. i think it has something to do with file type associations. i also want text files to open in a text editor, etc. how can i do this?

Perhaps you could give us an idea about which distro and window manager you are using.
