How do I add to the pkg_config_path environment variable?

I am using synce-svn applications, (full detail in thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...source-618713/ ) and, in the process of compiling, received an error message including:

"Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables WBXML2_CFLAGS
and WBXML2_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details."
Package libxml-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libxml-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'libxml-2.0', required by 'libwbxml2', not found"
This is not necessarily a problem- I have been in touch with sourceforge and it is possible that I won't need any of these packages.

However, I would like to learn how to overcome this type of situation in the future- ie where will I find pkg_config_path and how do I add to it? Thank you -Phil

To find PKG_CONFIG_PATH

echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH

To add to PKG_CONFIG_PATH

PKG_CONFIG_PATH=$PKG_CONFIG_PATH:/my/additional/config
