It's that good!

KDE 3.4.x is fantastic. As mentioned, everything just works and you don't pay attention to anything except getting work done!

KDE 3.4.X

It looks like you have RH 9.0. Why not go here and install the rpm pkgs:

ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.4...t/9/i386/RPMS/

I assume from your info, you know how to download the pkgs and install them using the rpm command or using a pkg mgr.

Good Luck.

Yes, I do know how to install RPM's but I am just (worried) :-SS about what are the consequences of installing a new Desktop Environment.
Are all the programs (applicatoins) restored as previous??
What are the things I have to take as a precautionary measures to avoid any kind of problems after the installation of the new environment?

And where do I install from...I mean.... from the GNOME environment (which I have for one user or from the console (Ctrl+Alt+F7) ???

I have not worked with RH 9.0. However, whatever pkg mgr you use, simply enable the kde-redhat repository and open a terminal (su -) and do yum update and all pkgs will download and install including the dependencies. In terms of precautions with your existing Gnome installation, I can't speak to that. I have Gnome 2.10 and KDE 3.4.1 installed in Fedora 4 and they live together perfectly well. They also worked well in Fedora Core 3.

This however is different than a RH 9.0 installation with an older Gnome desktop. I don't know if this would cause any problems for you. Additionally, the rpm's from KDE-Redhat are not supported by Red Hat if any problems occur. I have had no problems with these packages, but again your case is a bit different.

I am sure someone with experience with a similar case to you can either reassure you better than I or offer a different way to go about it. I do know that compiling/installing from source is a more painful and time intensive route as I did it when KDE 3.4 was in beta testing.

Good Luck and I appreciate your conservative approach and covering all bases.

Anyone knows a bit about how it compares to 3.3 (.2) ? Debian doesn't have 3.4 in it but I'm still amazed about how the speed has increased since last time I tried. I'm still not going to use it but it felt a lot quicked and OpenOffice just like loads as fast as in fluxbox.

It's true that Debian doesn't come with KDE 3.4, but you can get it here if you'd like -- J.W.

Thanks for the link. Is that an official package that'll move in the official apt sources?
