help with steam and wine

The Steam installer keeps telling me to turn off compatibily mode (compatibily mode in windows xp). I tried google and
wine --winver=winxp Steam.exe
but wine says command is not found.

thanks in advance

Are you talking straight wine? You are probably going to need to install the latest cedega to have much luck with steam... It's only $15...

So what game are you trying to play? How much did it cost?

Its sounds like you are trying to install HL2 or CS. Below I posted a link I used but I will give you my workaround. All you really need is steam from there it will set up HL2 and CS in your wine directory.

-First things first download the tahoma.ttf font and throw that in your /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/truetype directory.

-Now download the wine 0.9.5 and install it.

-Go to console and run wine as normal user

-Now download mozcontrol.tgz and extract to /.wine/drive_c

-"cd to /.wine/drive_c/mozcontrol" and type "wine regsvr32 mozctlx.dll"

-Install steam.exe It may crash like it says at 27% just restart it and let it update steam 100%

-If you have any problems typing in your login info at the steam startup screen then type winecfg in console and click on graphics tab and check emulate a virtual desktop I used 1024x768.

-Rerun steam

The link below is for an older release of wine if you follow those instructions you will not have much luck.
