I have RH9 now installed and running. I would like to update the kernel and open office and gaim as that is primary for this machine .... I am new to linux and I was told that RH is probaly going to be a little easier for me. I am running on the 2.4 kernel and gnome is my GUI. Please send help to edward@edgonline.net
RH9 lost support in mid to late 2004. There are no more updates for it via yum or up2date from RH. If you want to stick with the RH line of distros for the desktop, and as a newbie i think that is a great thing, then i sujest you hit the Fedora Core site, grab release 4 and install that.
RC5 is just now in beta so you will still have some supported time with RC4. (RC= release canadate) Fedora is what the RedHat desktop project is now called.
Thanks for the info, I'll catch up at some point .. like your sugest I am just trying to learn the basics right now. if I can just get things working that would be nice so I can learn the basics and then advance. all help is appreciated right now ..
along with the help with the software install I am also having an isue with it not reconizing my audio card ... which is on-board I have an MSI865GVm2 mother board Intel 865GV chipset ... the audio is a realtek ALC655 5.1 Dolby(R) .. help on this issue is also appreciated ..
Can you start different threads for different questions and can you provide more details about your problems in your posts.
Redhat 9 is now an obsolete distro. Try something new like Fedora Core 4 which is a direct descendent of the old Redhat Linux distribution. You will find that a lot of questions about Redhat 9 go unanswered because most people have move on to Fedora Core or Edhat Enterprise Linux.
