Help with backup on an lvm system

I have a system containing 2 hd's. One is reserved for static windows shares and backup. This disk (hdb) is simple ext3. hda contains 4 lvm partitions. It would seem that creating an image of the disk would not be possible in this case. (though i dont know for certain because of striping) is there a better way to back up files other than simply scripting compressed backups of individual files? In the past resore is more like reinstall than a system wide 1 or 2 step restore using a boot disk and restoring with an image of the systems hda.
noncritical system here. I just want to learn.
also does anyone know if veritas can be installed on rh9. I was not able to install a copy i got on rh8 a few months ago.
thanx

If I follow you you could always use dd to backup your system.
