help booting new kernel.

I just compiled a new kernel on my system and the files are in place and edited /boot/grub/menu.lst. tried to boot into the new kernel and got the following error message.

Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda" or Unknown-block(0,0).
Please append a correct "rot=" option.
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on Unknown-block(0,0).
here's my menu.lst entries for my new kernel and my old kernel that came with my system.

Code:
title Kernel 2.6.8.1
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1 root=/dev/hda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8.1
savedefault
boot

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.7-1-386
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-1-386 root=/dev/hda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.7-1-386
savedefault
boot

hhm....

Are you sure your kernel partition is a primary one? Otherwise, partition numbers in GRUB start from 4 (equivalent to hda5)

I've only got 1 disk and 2 partitions. my first partition is where all of the files are and the second is swap.

Umm...

Ok, but are those two primary partitions or logical partitions inside an extended partition?

/dev/hda1 is primary
/dev/hda5 is logical

Ok

I already said that
The thing is, if your root partition is logical, it can't be hda1. If it isn't, then... hope someone else can help.
