I've tried to chown 777 , chmod 777. Nothing is working.

root@ttyp0[miked]# chown 777 .xinitrc
chown: changing ownership of `.xinitrc': Read-only file system
root@ttyp0[miked]#

-rw-r--r-- 1 knoppix users 29 Oct 12 08:48 .xinitrc

I know I need to change the permission, but for some reason root is not able to do this.

Any ideas!!!!!

If using Knoppix, have you changed from the default read-only to read-write by right clicking on the drive and choosing that option?
