Hard lockup when using Firefox and Opera on Kubuntu 8.04 - 64 bit

This is a Compag F700 AMD Turion X2 64 / Nvidia Graphics

I'm currently stuck with damned slow dialup, but this is not usually a problem for me

When I get online, I can do things like Adept-Manager for hours at a time with no problems. Within a couple minutes of using Firefox 3 or Opera 64 bit, the system locks up. My only option is to turn of the system.

Items I have noticed.

The 'top' command in Konsole shows a jump in CPU usage in 'events/0' in the 11% range

'top' will freeze at the same time as Firefox/Opera.

Mouse may be able to move for a couple seconds, but otherwise non-functional.

Cannot access any other command line screens - keyboard is locked.

Does not occure any other time other than when online with a browser

Dual Boot system - Vista hasn't crashed although I rarely use it.

- - Been scratching my head with this problem for three weeks.

Nothing works

Cannot do anything with a keyboard so getting to a command line is impossible. Been looking at the logs via KDE Log viewer, but I can't seem to see any history of events prior to the lockup. TOP command is set to 3 second updates, and that quits running, so you cant see what may have overloaded.

I'd like to see the events or log entries that may have been recorded prior too or during the event, but I don't seem to see those at this point (frankly, in my years with Linux, I rarely ever had to look at logs)
