Hi

Have you tried to fix/reload the MBR.

I had a 'weird' grub issue when I loaded a distro on a netbook that had a 8gb memory card that I did not know about.

I 'faffed about' trying to resolve why I was getting the grub panic prompt.

When I eventually reloaded the MRB *** PROBLEM SOLVED ***.

The MBR may not be the cause of your problem, but reloading it will do no harm and will at least eliminate it.

Note : I cannot remember if I had to reinstall the distro after I fixed the boot issue. I probably did to ensure a clean fresh build.

That is why I said to unmount & remove usb flash drive.
When booted into usb external run
Quote:
sudo fdisk -l
& whatever drive the usb drive is registering as install grub to it or edit /etc/fstab.

Okay well heres an update. first of all i am very sure grub is on the external.
second, at boot in the grub2 menu, changing all instances of "hd2" to "hd1" and all "sdc1" to sdb1" allowed me to boot without having the 8GB present

SOLVED! after booting with edited grub, updated grub and reinstalled it, grub is now pointed to boot from /dev/sdb rather than /dev/sdc1
