grub and booting in a multi-hd system

Need to clear some doubts concerning grub and booting in a multi-harddisks system.

1. In such a system, only one hd can be used for boot-up and this hd only will have grub installed on it?

2. Every hd will have a MBR which holds the partition table. But only one, the one used for booting up the system, will have grub installed in the MBR?

3. If one drive in a dual-drive system is used as the rsync backup drive, can it, if at all, be used to boot-up the system. If so, what needs to be done? This could provide a way to minimise downtime if the current system drive has to be retired.
