growisofs cant burn to TDK DVD-R

hi all

I am facing a problem burning to TDK DVD-R media... its the bluish-gray kinda plain looking DVDs... here is my command and the output... i did try burning using k3b bu got the exact same error...

--------------------------------
/usr/bin/growisofs -Z /dev/hdc=/home/var-iso/Image/k3b_image.img -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=tty -dvd-compat -speed=1
Executing 'builtin_dd if=/home/var-iso/Image/k3b_image.img of=/dev/hdc obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/hdc: "Current Write Speed" is 2.0x1385KBps.
0/4646580224 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:??
0/4646580224 ( 0.0%) @0x, remaining ??:??
:-[ WRITE@LBA=10h failed with SK=3h/ASC=0Ch/ACQ=00h]: Input/output error
:-( write failed: Input/output error
/dev/hdc: flushing cache
/dev/hdc: updating RMA
/dev/hdc: closing disc

---------------------------------

I tried different combinations of the options but still the same error... although it does say 'closing disc' nothing is written to the media and it is still recognized as blank. my writer is a Pioneer HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA 4080N.

Strangely enough burning works fine with TuffDisc media which is less than half the price of these TDKs :-( I also managed to burn on some other cheap media... DataWrite I think it was... just these TDKs... oh and I am using Mandriva 2006 Free.

any help is most welcome.

thanks

lib.

I haven't tried to burn a dvd from the command line, so I can't help you with that.

In k3b, I've had nothing but failures resulting from clicking on the Burn dvd icon.

On the other hand, I've had nothing but success if I go to the Tools menu, and click on Burn DVD, then drag and drop the iso onto the bottom panel, then click on Burn.

Just a thought. Hope it helps you.

hi...

i did try using k3b in the beginning... but i would get errors... same one as when i used the command line... which i tired after k3b failed... i thought k3b was the problem. but now i think the real problem lies with the media... this is very strange as i have never had problems with TDK media before. I did manage to burn 1 DVD using Tuffdisk media and it did without any fuss... if I manage to burn something else... when I do have something to burn I will know if it really is the TDKs that are giving this error...

I hope I havent bought some fake expensive TDKs... these bluish grey ones that I got also seem slightly dubious.. the first media I ever used was TDKs just like the ones I got but one difference which although seems insignificant is the only difference I have found between those TDKs that worked brilliantly and these duds... the edges of the TDKs that worked was smooth and rounded... ie not round when you look at it from the top :-P (like duh) but rounded when u look at it in profile... whereas these I got now have right angled edges like all the other cheaper media... difference best felt by running my finger along the edge of the DVD...

I'll post again if I get something conclusive

cheers...

lib.
