i am looking for text editors that would display green types and black background properly with snytax highlight. i have tried a couple so far but none of them seems to work perfectly. i tried:
1. Gedit - the cursor's color remains black and can't be changed when the background is set to black.
2. Nedit - the text foreground's color can only be changed if the syntax highlight is turned off.
3. emacs - ummmm, i have not yet managed change any color yet
4. kate - instead of a cursor, it uses highlight for the current line, i don't really like that.
You could use vim/gvim/kvim with the matrix theme or create your own (it's not that hard, you can download a theme template). Here's a screenshot of gvim compiled with GTK2 and editing a bash file with the matrix theme and syntax highlighting (which is a bit dull in this particular theme).
Kate can be configured so that the current line is the same colour as the normal background; that way it isn't highlighted. I don't have the latest Kate, but in my version the colour of the cursor is the same as the colour of the text that it's on at any time. All the other colours are configurable. (Settings -> Configure Kate...)
i tried to use vim by typing 'vim' in the terminal and it loaded in the terminal window and i can't seem to type anything on it. is this normal? maybe i should take a look at the manual or something
Try typing gvim to get the graphical variant. vim is not like Notepad or any other DOS/Windows editor, it's based on how vi behaved back in the day, but with zillions of improvements. Type vimtutor at the prompt for the built-in vim 101.
If you installed the previously mentioned vim-X11 package and typing gvim doesn't work, then gvim is probably not in the PATH environment variable. You can check it by typing set | grep PATH. Try typing /usr/X11R6/bin/gvim as it might be installed there. If it's success, you need to put PATH=$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin in a shell configuration file or start-up script, like ~/.bashrc for example. If gvim is somewhere else, you can find it by typing whereis gvim.
On a side note: there's also a lightweight version of kate, called kwrite.
great!! i now also got gvim to work and has green over black color scheme. thanks. however, how would i save the color scheme change? i have tried to renamed the one i like to default.vim, but when gvim loads up, its not it.
