Looks like you are are using a wrong executable 'ns'.
( Or you have a failed build.)

... the safe way is to use a copy of ns to a unique name :
$ cd ns-2.33/
$ cp ns ns-hls
$ sudo cp ns-hls /usr/local/bin/
* Then all hls simulations can be done with $ ns-hls file.tcl
