gnu patch commad broke

hi all,
recently I upgraded from Kernel 2.4.26 to 2.6.10. I went to patch my kernel to add something to it and have discovered that patch doesn't work. No matter what kernel I use, and what version of patch I download, it just doesn't work.
it just sits there, even if I don't give it any options. ex:
Code:
steve@greenstar:~$ patch
and it sat there for 5 hours doing nothing. When I tell it to run in the background i get this:
Code:
steve@greenstar:~$ patch &
[1] 2981

[1]+ Stopped patch
any ideas? thanks in advance

You have to give the patch program arguments. Try looking at the manpage (man patch).

Yes, by default patch runs in interactive mode, so it's sitting there waiting for input. To patch from a patchfile, you need to use 'patch -i filename'.

ah i found the problem....there was some other program that had taken up residence in my /usr/local/bin that was also called patch....and so it was going to that instead of my true patch command, thanks for the help anyways
