Question GNOME won't allow me to log in as superuser

I am using SuSE Linux 8.2.

I recently had to switch to the GNOME GUI. I like it but have come into a problem: When going into YaST to configure, it asks for the superuser password. I enter the password but then get an error:

"Gnome SuperUser: tx connection to ":0.0" refused by server.

Here's my hw:

BFG brand Nvidia Geforce 4600 video card, 128mb RAM.
Asus NF7 mobo with the latest Nforce2 drivers with integrated sound and NIC disabled.
Western Digital 40GB HD.
SB Audigy sound
3com 3c905c-xl NIC
1GB RAM (two 512MB Crucial RAM modules)

Why would this be refusing me when I can go to a command prompt shell within GNOME and log in as root through there?

Also, if I really like GNOME, should I consider switching to Red Hat as their GUI is based on GNOME? (Ximian is a bit pricey and doesn't offer much in return...?)

Thanks!
