Gnome -> Music CD sound issue

When I insert a Music CD GNome-CD is launched immdiately. Although it recognises the CD and starts playing it (the counter advances) I get no sound. Grip also doesn't produce any sound. Xmms won't recognise Audio CDs. What should I do to be able to listen to Audio CDs on my system?

All the appropriate 'sliders' are turned up in the mixer?

If not, run alsamixer from the command line (or the nice Gnome Mixer) and make sure that CD Audio, PCM and Master Volume are all at suitable levels.

The other problem could be that you don't have an 'audio' cable between your CDRom and your soundcard.

There are two ways to play CDs on a computer
1.) 'Digitally'. The Processor does lots of work here. As the data is read from the CD, the information is sent down the IDE cable and the processor does some work and sends the audio to the sound card.
2.) 'Analogue'. The Processor does almost no work here. As the CD spins around it sends audio data down an analogue cable, directly to the sound card. The sound card then plays the audio.

If you don't have an analogue cable between your CDRom and Soundcard you'll have to tell GnomeCD to use the digital method. I'm not 100% that it can do that, but if it can, it'll be in the preferences.

Gnome Mixer did the job! (Boy, do I feel stupid!)

Thanks for the added info about digital and analogue processing. Digital processing doesn't seem to place any type of burden on my system (as a matter of fact, it's hardly noticable). I Imagine the system uses the digital way when ripping.
