i'm using ubuntu and i upgrade to edgy /beta/ and when i type my user and password in login screen i see gnome splash but then i see again login screen asking me for user and password. it seems like xserver restart by itself. i try to log into gnome failsafe but it fail to login too. I can login only with failsafe terminal but when i type command in terminal like "locate gnome" /command output is displayed more than one page in x term/ xserver restart and i see again login screen promping me for my username. I am having the same problem. I installed Edgy, and when it logs in I see the splash, sometimes I see the panels appear, and then it returns to the GDM. Twice I have been able to click on an icon before it logged out and work for about 15 minutes, and then it returns to the login screen. I had it reconfigure X, but that didn't seem to work. I logged into failsafe terminal and did an apt-get isntall xubuntu-desktop and have the same problem.

When I then reconfigured X I chose vesa instead of tdfx drive (I have a voodoo 3) I was able to log in again.
I have searched and found this was a problem for others as well.

I hope this helps. Maybe soon they will get a tdfx driver that works.

Thank you

solved!

http://linuxfud.wordpress.com/2006/0...-login-screen/

If any of you have a gnome panel set to be transparent, this may be the issue.

I deleted all my gnome files via a console login, restarted, and all was fine, then added all my settings but avoided using panel transparency, as much as it looks cool.

This is a serious gnome bug, as a feature which is minor decoration can cause complete system collapse, which, at least for a noob like me, took days to resolve, chasing driver and permission issues, only to find it was a simple setting on the desktop.

best,
M

I saw that link before I posted here, I tried what it suggests but still no luck. Which files did you delete?

Found this thread while Googling... I tried deleting the Gnome files as suggested here:

http://linuxfud.wordpress.com/2006/0...-login-screen/

Code:
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
However this didn't solve the problem.

I am using an old machine for testing various things and it turned out that it was an issue with the tdfx driver used for a Voodoo3 card.

The comment from 'audiophyl' at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/68291 resolved the issue.

Thought I'd post this just in case someone else Googles their way past in the future...
