Gnome 2.6 problem on Debian Sid(2.6.4)

hey guys,
I recently added the gnome expeimental packages URL's to my sources.list in debian and downloaded and installed gnome 2.6.I am not much of a gnome user but i wanted to give it a shot.
However i am having problems.Whenever i sartx with gnome-session..i gget the following errors:
1)no icons are displayed on the desktop..as if there are no icon associations).
2)The window manager(metacity) does not seem to come up since i can not see the buttons to close,minimize etc.
3)The gnome splash screen does not disappear.
I know all this is kind of hard to picture so i took a screenshot of the desktop 5 minutes after satrting gnome-session.

I have the iocn sets working now...but still no windows manager.
Another screenshot of how far i have gotten till now:

I still see the gnome splash screen behind the open folder window and the mouse cursor still is a X and not a pointer like it shud be.
I had the same problem under Gnome 2.4 too but i never really looked to correct it.Could someone help me please?
