I have been burnt twice by KDE 3.2.2

Downloading 3.2.2 and trying to run it on FC1 failed due to dependencies.
So I figure I wlll use FC2 that has 3.2.2 as a package.

First FC2 is very nice but totally unusable.
It's very unstable .. a lot of things just didn't work after install.

The safe way might have been to start with a small defined subset but I
was being a pig .. so even open office didn't work AT ALL .. almost all the apps hung.
I think it's a dependency issue .. and I don't have the beans or the patience to fathom them.

So I gave up and went back to FC 1 .. I wanted to see if I could use Koffice 1.3.1 but they have the
same mess .. the RPM's have dependencies that are not in the folder

Some of the dependencies are wonderfully circular and the GUI based tool craps on them.

I think this whole thing is compounded by FC being biased towards GNOME that I really could
care less as a UI .. KDE is a nicer GUI but absolutely sucky in packaging.
KDE is providing updated version of Koffice for Mandrake and Suse only (& solaris) ... there is not asingle
mirror that provides Koffice 1.3.1.x

So I think the future for FC with KDE looks bleak .. I wasted 2 days on installing and reinstalling
now I am resigned to using Gnome .. and my ethusiasm for this is waning fast.

I was planning on moving most of my work to linux .. but I might have to make peace with windows
again.

I have no clue why winsnomore thinks he needs Fedora Core 2... the RPMs on www.kde.org are for Fedora Core 1. One thing I can say though is that with those dependencies, you are supposed to install the arts package first and then the kdelibs package and then the kdebase package. That could be your problem, winsnomore. As for you carlwill, you are downloading a source RPM... that's your problem. You want just a regular binary RPM not a source one. Source RPMs end in .src.rpm and binary RPMs just end in .rpm. Here is a link to all of the RPMs for Fedora Core 1

ftp://apt.kde-redhat.org/kde-redhat/...1/RPMS.stable/

Download all of the packages that you want. Arts, kdelibs, and kdebase are required while the rest are optional. Here is a link to a description of all the packages.

http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq...html#id2907952

Once you get them downloaded first install arts, then kdelibs, then kdebase. After that install all the rest of the packages that you want in any order. If you want to install kdeaddons, it always goes on last.

Well I have 2 things to say about this .. what you described is wonderful i.e. what to download to install 3.2.2
I wish the wonderful folks at KDE had the good humor to put that somewhere visible.

BUT .. the other issue is very real.

Even on FC1 Gnome and KDE have some(plenty) compatability issues.
I went back to FC2 .. I was careful this time and I picked the packages carefuly I had to settle for Gnome but
I can live with it. I have gotten it to work

Thanks for list of the packages to download

I am not yet ready to start compiling .. it's too early in life to do that .. I don't want to be hacker, I just want
to use some thing that works.
