Getting a C Compiler error when installing Pear libraries using Pecl

Hello, I am trying to install the PHP extension located here: http://pecl.php.net/package/uploadprogress, but I'm getting the following error:

building in /var/tmp/pear-build-root/uploadprogress-1.0.1
running: /root/tmp/pear/uploadprogress/configure
checking for egrep... grep -E
checking for a sed that does not truncate output... /bin/sed
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out
checking whether the C compiler works... configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.
If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'.
See `config.log' for more details.
ERROR: `/root/tmp/pear/uploadprogress/configure' failed

Has anyone here dealt with a similar problem before? I'm not sure what's causing the problem or how to fix it, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

As the configure script tells you, "See `config.log' for more details." Google the "cannot run C compiled programs" this is a fairly common problem and it generally involves missing parts of the toolchain.

Can you post the relevant part of "config.log"?
