gdm can't start login screen

I upgraded from SuSE 9.3 to SuSE 10.0 on a Dell Latitude D800 laptop.
Since then I have not been able to get gdm to run.
The nvidia splash screen displays, then I get the gray background of an X server without a window manager. After 30 seconds or so, the screen goes blank and repeats the display of the nvidia splash screen and the server blankground.

There are no obvious errors in the Xorg.0.log file.

The /var/log/gdm/:0.log file contains about 5000 lines starting with the following. gdm appears to be in a loop.

I've tried getting rid of my .Xauthority file and the one in /root. That didn't make any difference.
My /etc/hosts file is okay. In terminal mode I can run yast and check for online updates, run svn, etc. I can't run gdm.

Thanks for any help,
Steve

Try purging all gdm configuration files (usually the easiest way is a reinstallation).

I tried:
Xorg.conf & sleep 10; setenv DISPLAY :0.0; xterm

and X started!
Then I typed:

setenv GOING_GDM_DEVELOPMENT 1
/usr/lib/gdmlogin

and got the message:

Could not access GDM configuration file

gdm.conf is in /etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf
