First of all, you should read the documentation that came with gcc. If you read it, you would have seen that you have to build/configure it outside of where you unpacked it. Make another directory on the same level as where you unpacked gcc, and go in to it. Then do '../gcc-4.0.1/configure'
To be quite frank, if you didn't know to do this, then you probably have no reason to compile gcc other than because you can.
