Question gaim compile problem

Hi everyone,

When i try to install gaim th ./configure script said that i didn't have glib 2.0 > installed.
so i installed glib 2.6.0. All went well with no problems. Now when i try ti configure gaim i get the error:

Quote:
checking for GLIB - version >= 2.0.0...
*** 'pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0' returned 2.6.1, but GLIB (2.6.0)
*** was found! If pkg-config was correct, then it is best
*** to remove the old version of GLib. You may also be able to fix the error
*** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing
*** /etc/ld.so.conf. Make sure you have run ldconfig if that is
*** required on your system.
*** If pkg-config was wrong, set the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH
*** to point to the correct configuration files
no
configure: error:
*** GLib 2.0 is required to build Gaim; please make sure you have the GLib
*** development headers installed. The latest version of GLib is
*** always available at http://www.gtk.org/.
Have looked in ld.so.conf and didn't see anything,

The file is listed below,

Quote:
/usr/local/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/i486-slackware-linux/lib
/opt/kde/lib
/usr/lib/qt/lib
I'm not really sure about the LD_LIBRARY_PATH or pkg-config.

I'm at a bit of a loose end here. Any help would be greatly recieved.

It seems that the older version of Glib is still being used, not the newer version.

I looked at my /etc/ld.so.conf and had the same thing, so I don't think that file is the problem.

What does
Code:
echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
show?

If your newer version of glib isn't in that directory, you need to put it there.

Hello again,

Quote:
What does
Code:
echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
show?
Executing this command in the shell gives this result.

Code:
root@david:~# echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH

root@david:~#
I take it as meaning that i have no $LD_LIBRARY_PATH set.
Is it possibe to set it to point to my glib2.6.0 directory if so how is this done?

Thanks for your patience.

You can set it by doing this:
Code:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/your/lib/directory

After doing a bit more digging, i found that i have glib already installed
on my system using KPackage. tried to uninstall it and then reinstall using KPackage
but just keep getting the same error message. I am still unsure as to what directory i
should set $LD_LIBRARY_PATH to. Do you think i should just uninstall glib using
KPackage and do a make clean and just start all over again?

It may be easier to install glib (in a logical place) from source and then just make clean. Then check and see what your $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is set to. If it's set to anything, and your glib isn't there, move it there. If $LD_LIBRARY_PATH isn't set to anything, set it to glib's parent directory. Then try installing gaim.
