you can install vsftpd or proftp. When I used Mandrake, vsftpd, was my favorite coz it was simple to configure.

ya those both are very common, also wu-ftp is very popular too. My advice would be to find which one would best fit your needs (for me that would be the one that installed by default onto my system heheh). And start reading the man pages to get a grip on the concepts.

Ive setup a couple with proftp and found it surprisingly simple. A small word of advice as you set off on your journey: SECURITY DONT FORGET TO USE IT - Ya it can be a pain to setup, but worth it in the end. Trust me, all it takes is a clever (and evil) techy to catch wind that your running an ftp server (presumably in your house?), and in two seconds its hijacked serving out porn or warez. You can implement simple things like changing the port numbers or creating an ftp account without a shell. With that said you may also want to look into encrypted forms of file transfer or if it were like with me you just need a fast and simple personal way to transfer files.

Anyway I recomend PROFTP cause it worked easily and well for me. When you have more specific questions post 'em here.

wud it make a differance if i just make it local then use php and apache to act as an interface to access the ftp server. I mean wud it be more secure. If there any way to make the ftp server invisible to the internet.

becos i haven't setup prot forwarding for port 21 on my router doesn't it effectively make the server unaccessible from the internet
