the majority of software on linux is freeware and opensource. check out sites such as sourceforge.net and freshmeat.net for more of this software. also check out your package manager for software that you can install incredibly easily.

hope it helps.

In OpenSUSE run YaST and open up the "Software Management" to find applications.

In Fedora run "pirut" or run "Add & Remove" from the menu to find apps.

This isn't Windows, 99% of what you use is not only "freeware", it is written, provided, supported, packaged, and made available free of charge. "shareware" for all practical purposes doesn't exist, and "pay for" software is limited as well (usually specialized).

For fedora, look on the menu for Add/Remove software. On Suse: System > Administration > yast.

But: your choices will be very limited if you haven't set up any repositories yet. If you wonder, what are those, then I'm sure you haven't done so yet.

Refer to this site for setting up third-party repositories.

Article from the year 2000 which gives a short explanation of why open source and freeware are not the same thing. *Hint* in Freeware software, the devs don't have to give the source code.
