force linux to use a specified res?

hey everyone,

so i've got this nice new monitor, and i'm absolutely positive it runs at 1024x768 at up to 120 hz, as i've tested it on both a windows machine and a with knoppix. Knoppix auto sees it as hella low refresh rate since it doesn't seem to have ddc for some reason (its a refurbished dell trinitron. Old, but VERY nice). In knoppix, at boot i cant type: knoppix screen=1024x768 vrefresh=100 and it works with no problems. Promblem is, in my main computer (slackware), i can't get it to run at anything past 85 hz. If i go into my xf86config file and set the vrefresh to 100 instead of a range (60-120, with which it choses 85), i get screens found, but none have a usable configuration.

I've tried IgnoreEDID and NoDDC, but neither of those options work.

Any ideas?

thanks,
-fibbi

Are you doing this for gaming? That has got to be the ONLY reason for such a high refresh rate. Anything above 75 uses more electricity than necessary and above 85 often blurs screen fonts. If you're looking for superfast games FPS (although smooth motion on a TV is at 30 fps), I can see the high #, but is that what you're doing it for?

My eyes. I (unlike most), see a strong flicker in 85 hz, so it bugs the crap out of me.

That really sucks a lot. Maybe you can put that eyesight to good use.

Try xvidtune and see if there is a modeline that will work to produce that refresh rate at that resolution. Perhaps 1152x864 wuold work.
