I reinstalled Firefox last night and subsequently, I had to reinstall flash. However, it does not work. It worked perfectly before the reinstall.
I've installed it just about every conceivable way. I downloaded the RPM from Adobe and used the software installer, and I added the repository and installed through yum. Neither of these worked. I didn't install from source because I seem to have the WORST luck doing so. I've done a complete reboot after installing and there are objects that come saying it needs additional plugins in order to be viewed.
To check if a plugin is loaded/working in your Firefox browser, type this into the address bar and hit ENTER to load the page:
Code:
about:plugins
If it doesn't say anything about Flash plugin, it's obviously not working.
I'm not sure if you can install Flash from "source", because I doubt if Adobe releases the source code. Installing Flash from Adobe is simply a matter of copying one file (libflashplayer.so) to your browser's plugin directory (for example /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/) and making sure it's readable/executable by the users (chmod a+rx for that).
The package from Adobe's site comes with an "installer script", but all it does, effectively, is to copy the .so file to your browser's plugin directory which it tries to deduce itself. You can do that as well, if you have enough privileges to write to the plugin directory (means root account or sudo).
And in the end it is of course possible that the plugin just doesn't work with your browser. Has happened to me - and no idea why.
There is an entry for flash in my aboutlugins page. It reads:
video/flv Flash video flv Yes
It's categorized under the Totem Web Browser Plugin 2.20.1
It's very odd, this was working as of two days ago. I don't see why it would work then and not work after a reinstall of Firefox. I don't remember doing anything any differently when I first installed it.
I guess I was wrong about installing from source. It was a tar.gz file. For whatever reason I thought that was from source.
The only difference I can think of was the flash plugin was installed when I was using 2.0.0.8. Now I have 2.0.0.11. If the plugin isn't compliant with .11, wouldn't it have stopped working as soon as I upgraded to it?
For whatever reason, I cannot access the plugins folder for mozilla. It's location is /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins. I can only access it via the terminal. Anyway, here is what's there:
[Elwood@localhost plugins]$ ls
libtotem-basic-plugin.so libtotem-gmp-plugin.xpt
libtotem-basic-plugin.xpt libtotem-mully-plugin.so
libtotem-complex-plugin.so libtotem-mully-plugin.xpt
libtotem-complex-plugin.xpt libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so
libtotem-gmp-plugin.so libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.xpt
Pretty easy to tell that flash isn't there.
Another difference I noticed. I used to have both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Firefox installed. When I removed it, I removed BOTH. Now I only have the 64-bit version installed. The flash plugin that it attempts to install is 32-bit. Maybe this is my problem?
Hm... I listed the contents of the plugins contained at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and that had the libflashplayer.so file. I copied it over to /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugin and I don't seem to notice the "Additional plugins need to be installed" crap. I'll keep you posted.
64 bit is a wee bit outside my knowledge. It may be because you are mixing 32- and 64-bit programs, but I couldn't say for sure. I do recall seeing other threads around that discuss mixing 32- and 64-bit stuff, a search should bring them up.
Hopefully, from your last post, though you've fixed it....
That doesn't seem to have fixed it. I find that really strange. Maybe I'll try installing both 32 and 64-bit versions of it later. That is when it worked last. I'll post my findings later.
